A procession of floats took to the streets of Woodley for the 49th annual Woodley Carnival on June 13th 2009.

South Lake Primary School children won the best float competition by dressing up as jungle animals based on the film Madagascar. More than 7,000 people turned out on the sunny afternoon at Woodley Memorial Ground to enjoy the festivities.

The best-dressed stall was won by the Royal National Lifeboats’ Institution

Visitors were able to see chain saw sculpture by Ben Loughill, climb Spider Mountain, watch puppet shows, learn about wildlife, take mini-train rides and listen to live music on the bandstand.

Chairman of Woodley Carnival Bill Soane said: “It was a very successful day. We were incredibly lucky with the weather. “It rained a little bit later in the evening, but there wasn’t enough to dampen anybody’s spirits. “The carnival floats were of a very high standard this year and I think that has encouraged a lot of people to think about taking part next year.”

To celebrate the 50th Woodley Carnival on June 5th 2010 entry will be FREE.
